Crude Gum, which is known as Oleo Pine Resin (OPR), is a complex mixture of organic material, produced naturally by pine trees. OPR is a natural and renewable source. By steam distillation of OPR, two important materials are produced - Gum Rosin and Gum Turpentine. Gum Rosin is later chemically treated and modified to obtain various derivatives – the Rosin Resins. Esterification of Gum Rosin with various alcohols yields Rosin Esters, which go in several applications. Hydrogenation of Rosin and its esters improves the colour of the Rosin Resins.
